This week I pulled the trigger and purchased my second spyderco endura. I originally bought my first earlier this year because after alot of time researching stats and watching user reviews , this knife had a whole lot of value wrapped into a decent price. Some basic specs on this knife, overall length 8.78",blade length 3.80",, FRN handle and the blade is Aogami Super Blue Steel with a 420j1 laminated steel on top. It was sharp but really needed a good knife sharpening.
This high quality steel is produced by Hitachi Metals of Japan using a special process that makes Super Blue the highest grade blue steel made. Super Blue is classified as an Exotic Carbon Steel by cutlery standards and has a loyal following in the culinary world as well as by knife makers.
I bought this knife online from infinitepursuits.com for a very reasonable $89. My order was processed and shipped the same day. The company sent my super blue endura 4 via usps 1 day shipping which was excellenton thier part. The knife came just as it should have, new in box, clean and undamaged. I will be definitely be adding infinitepursuits.com to my personal list of websites with great prices. So I unboxed the spyderco and found no flaws. The blade was straight and the lock was solid.
The one disappointment I had was that my spyderco super blue endura wasn't sharp. My previous endura which has a VG-10 blade came out of the box with a respectable edge on it..so what's different? Nothing. factory sharpened blades are hit and miss. So that left me thinking, is there a Spyderco Knife Sharpening Service? Ha! Just kidding. My first observation while starting to sharpen this syderco knife was that the geometry of the knife edge was asymmetrical with one side at 12 degrees and the other sitting at about 20. Pretty crazy right? I also noticed the edge was wavy possibly due to the shaky hand of a new grinder at the plant. Easy enough to fix.
I re profiled the edge back to 15 degrees on each side and gave it a premium sharpening. As the edge developed a beautiful shine I finished it to the highest grit. It now has wicked sharp edge that passes a level 5 hanging hair test across almost every part of the blade! Spyderco endura is a great knife and Im happy to own two . The handle has plenty of grip and the blade is of a great design. Go buy one and mail it in to my Professional Knife Sharpening Service to get it Scary Sharp!I
* Update. I originally posted this about a year ago. I must admit after this knife sharpener put an edge on this Super Blue Steel it has held up. I dont use this everyday but to still have an edge that passes the hanging hair test with 4's after this long is pretty note worthy. I think it shows that with a quality knife steel and good knife sharpening technique, a razor sharp knife edge will last for some time. Maloon's Knife Sharpening Services is here to help.
